L&Co 61
'The Valkyrie Piano' An amazing upright Arts and Crafts oak piano designed by Leonard F Wyburd for Liberty and Co.
Made by J and J Hopkinson.
The piano is inlaid with Pewter and Ebony stylised floral interlacing Celtic designs to the sides and stylised flower heads to the front. It has neat hinged extension flaps to each side very handy to stand drinks on which I presume were designed to prevent any spillage into the piano from drinks left on top of it. With it's outstanding hand wrought iron strap hinges and conforming stylised feet caps it is a delightful and appealing design.
A very rare example thought to be the only one known in existence still retaining it's original candle sconces with Celtic interlaced details, a work of art in their own right.
An outstanding statement of Arts and Crafts in the true Liberty style.
Height 50", Width 65", Depth 28". The side flaps are 11" each side making an overall width of 87" when they are both up.
Circa 1902.
